Museums in Biscarrosse
Biscarosse is a great town for tourism in the Landes region, particularly for its lake and the many nautical possibilities, but it’s also full of tourist sites to discover, such as the Biscarrosse hydra museum or the museum of traditions. If you’re staying in Biscarosse, it’s a good idea to put museums on your list of places to visit. In this article, you can discover the museums to visit while staying at camping La Rive.
The seaplane museum
It is located on the site of the former Latécoère base. It tells the story of the world’s seaplanes from 1910 to the present day. Indeed, from 1930 onwards, Biscarosse was chosen as the assembly and testing site for every French seaplane. The town has seen at least 120 seaplanes take off and land. Visitors can enter the legend of transatlantic flights to New York or Fort-de-France, during the golden age of seaplanes.
Having been home to such aviators as Mermoz, Saint-Exupéry, Pierre Georges Latécoère and Guillaumet, this base has had the privilege of becoming the only seaplane museum in France and Europe. Through the various rooms, models, exhibits and films, you can retrace the era of the seaplane. You’ll transcend each era as you discover the history of the seaplanes, the giant liners that have paraded through Biscarosse.
You’ll be delighted to discover seaplanes dating from 1912 to 1980. Some are in the process of being restored, while others have already been restored. You’ll see these aircraft on display in the exhibition hall of the Musée d’Hydraviation in Biscarrosse.
Free guides are available for children aged 3 to 12 to make their visit fun. Group tours are also available for adults. These legendary seaplanes are well worth a visit. So don’t hesitate to take a tour.
During your visit, you’ll learn about the lives of some of the most important people in the history of seaplanes, including Saint-Exupéry, Mermoz and Pierre Georges Latécoère.
The Museum of Traditions
The Musée des Traditions et de l’Histoire de Biscarosse (Museum of Biscarosse Traditions and History) will introduce you to the culture of Biscarosse. Through the objects on display dating back to the Middle Ages, you’ll discover the culture, understand the landscape and the way man has built and maintained it, learn about the formation of dunes and lakes, the exploitation of resin and all the rural and artisanal activities.
Dedicated staff are on hand to tell you the story of the formation of the Biscarosse dunes, its landscape and its lakes. In addition, the story of the town’s construction is told, and details of rural activities and crafts are given. You can also consult archive documents for further information.
