Lake Sanguinet Museum
Nestling in the heart of the village of Sanguinet, the Musée du Lac, a “Musée de France”, is a fascinating window on over 2,000 years of history buried beneath the waters of the lake. The fruit of four decades of underwater archaeological research carried out by the Centre de Recherches et d’Etudes Scientifiques, this museum houses a precious collection of 450 artifacts, providing a living testimony to the daily life of the inhabitants and their environment from the Neolithic to the present day.

The permanent exhibition, divided into 3 chronological sections (Neolithic, Metal Age and Antiquity), explores various aspects of human life such as habitat, crafts, agriculture, animal husbandry, metallurgy and navigation.
The immersive museography integrates documentation, films and models, offering visitors a unique interactive experience.
The presence of five underwater archaeological sites is explained by the formation of the lake over the last three millennia.
The museum itinerary, in symbiosis with the geography and environment, offers three keys to understanding the themes of “water, sand and man”, highlighting cultural heritage, the natural environment and underwater archaeology.
The museum also offers cultural activities for young visitors, such as educational tours and after-school workshops, as well as a souvenir store.
Game booklets are available to enable families to discover archaeology, the history of the lake’s formation and its biodiversity together, creating fun and enriching learning experiences.
A visit to the Sanguinet museum
The Musée du Lac de Sanguinet, the fruit of 40 years of underwater archaeological research, exhibits a collection of 450 objects retracing over 2000 years of history. Through three thematic rooms, it explores the evolution of the Aquitaine coastline, highlighting daily life, crafts, worship and navigation. The interactive museography integrates documentation, films and models. The five archaeological sites submerged in the lake reveal different eras, from the Bronze Age to Gallo-Roman antiquity. Pine and oak pirogues bear witness to ancient navigation. The museum offers a captivating insight into the region’s lakeside past.
Room 1 provides an overview of the history of the lake’s formation, its biodiversity and the Bronze and Iron Age remains discovered at sites such as Matocq, Put Blanc and l’Estey du Large.
Room 2 is dedicated to Gallo-Roman antiquity, highlighting the site of Losa, a stopover village along the Roman road between Bordeaux and Dax.
In Room 3, visitors can explore the history of navigation since the Bronze Age, with an exhibition featuring three of the 39 pirogues discovered in the lake.
